The South Portland City Council on Tuesday will vote on an order directing city staff to spend over $1,500 on painting rainbow crosswalks throughout the city this June in celebration of Pride Month.

If passed, the order will authorize the city to spend a total of $1,650 in taxpayer dollars to “infill Pride colors” with color chalk paint on three crosswalks — $550 per crosswalk — throughout the city.

The three crosswalks included in the order are Mountainview and Highland Avenue, the intersection of Anthoine Street and Broadway, and on Ocean Street near the Hiram Lodge Building.

Additionally, the order will require that the “Progress Pride flag” be flown on the South Portland City Hall flag pole for the duration of June — except for June 17 through 19, when the “Juneteenth flag” will be flown, in celebration of Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the ending of slavery in the U.S.

The City of South Portland has adopted both an “Artistic Crosswalk” policy and a policy related to the display of flags, in each case requiring the approval of the majority of the City Council to paint crosswalks or display certain commemorative flags as an expression of the Council’s official sentiments.

There are highway standards that are very specific regarding size, appearance, and locations.A good defense attorney ( I know, I know) could get an appeal for a driver claiming not to know what these multi-color road markings mean. People killed or injured as result could and should sue the agency that went rogue in not adhering to the US Traffic Code.

    Isn’t that interesting.
They told us it was donated money and volunteer painters before.
Don’t worry about offending Christians or other religions.
Advertise sexual desires in public and force us all to see it.
South Portland City Council are whack jobs who love to waste our money on useless virtue signaling.
    Shameful and immature.

Using taxpayer funds to deface public property is illegal. But we know the government doesn’t care about laws.

Flying any flag on the flag pole under or over the US flag is illegal under federal law I believe. They might want to do some homework on flag etiquette before they make their queer flag move. As far as Portland/S.Portland goes I no longer do business in either, I’ll drive past and go to New Hampshire if I have to to do business. Far as I’m concerned put a fence around it!
