U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers stationed at the World Trade International Bridge in Laredo, Texas, intercepted a shipment of over $5.1 million in marijuana being smuggled over the border by two Mexican nationals, the agency announced Monday.

The seizure of the narcotics occurred on Sunday, June 23, when a CBP officer at the World Trade Bridge referred a 38-year-old Mexican citizen driving a semi-trailer truck — purportedly hauling a commercial shipment — for secondary inspection.

Alongside the driver in the truck was a 33-year-old Mexican citizen, CBP said.

Upon a canine and non-intrusive inspection of the truck’s conveyance, CBP officers found 98 packages containing a total of 2,323 pounds of alleged marijuana.

CBP estimated the street value of the seized drugs at $5,198,328.

The marijuana, tractor and trailer were seized by CBP, and both Mexican nationals were arrested.

U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (ICE-HSI) is investigating the seizure.
