A Westbrook man is facing multiple assault charges and one count of refusing to submit to arrest after allegedly headbutting a police officer while being arrested, Westbrook Police announced Tuesday.
According to police, at about 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, officers responded to a residence on West Pleasant Street in Westbrook for a report of disturbance.
Upon arrival, officers discovered that the victim of an alleged assault had suffered a serious injury, and the victim was transported to the hospital, police said.
Westbrook Police then located a residence where they believed the suspect was, and surrounded the house.
After a “lengthy period,” police were able to take the suspect into custody, the police wrote in a Tuesday social media post.
During the arrest of the male suspect, he allegedly actively resisted arrest and headbutted an officer.
A female on the scene is alleged to have actively tried to obstruct officers from taking the male suspect into custody.
The male suspect, 34-year-old Damien Stockman of Westbrook, was charged with aggravated assault, assault on an officer and refusing to submit to arrest.
The female who allegedly tried to prevent officers from arresting Stockman, 51-year-old Gretchen Strubell, also of Westbrook, was arrested and charge with obstructing government administration.
Both suspects were transported to the Cumberland County Jail.
The Westbrook Police officer who was headbutted suffered a minor injury, but was able to remain on the scene to assist in taking Stockman into custody, and remained on patrol for the remainder of their shift, the department stated.
