A Lewiston man was sentenced to 35 years in prison on Tuesday in a Portland federal court for sexually exploiting a child and possessing child sexual abuse material, a case which the sentencing judge said was “among the worst” she has ever seen.

U.S. District Judge Nancy Torresen sentenced Timothy Doyon, 29, of Lewiston, to 35 years in prison, to be followed by a lifetime of supervised release.

Doyon, who previously pleaded guilty on Oct. 24, 2023, was also ordered to pay $103,500 in restitution.

“This crime is among the worst I have ever seen,” said Judge Torresen when sentencing Doyon.

Torresen thanked the law enforcement officers and federal investigators who worked on the case, stating that if Doyon had not been caught and arrested on state charges, “I don’t know where this would have gone.”

“And based on the images that have been described from the child sex abuse material that was in your possession, I don’t think it was going anywhere good,” Torresen added.

According to court records, in March 2023, the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit received three tips from the nonprofit National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding a phone number that had been used to upload more than 400 files of suspected child sexual abuse material to a cloud-based storage platform.

Investigators found that the phone number belonged to Timothy Doyon, who is a 25-year sex offender registrant in Maine due to a prior state conviction for possessing sexually explicit material of a minor under 12, according to the Maine U.S. Attorney’s Office.

A search of Doyon’s person, vehicle and residence in May 2023 resulted in the seizure of multiple electronic devices, including cell phones and digital storage devices.

At least one image recovered from the devices depicted Doyon engaging in sexually explicit conduct with a child under the age of 12, federal prosecutors said.

Doyon also admitted to investigators that he had downloaded, viewed, and saved child sexual abuse material.

The case was investigated by the federal Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit and the Lewiston Police Department.

“This case has been one of the most heartbreaking and emotionally challenging cases our special agents have worked,” said Special Agent in Charge Michael Krol for HSI New England.

“Today’s significant sentence reflects the absolute cruelty and horror Doyon inflicted upon a child,” Krol said. “We hope that the conclusion of this case and the knowledge that he will be in federal prison for many, many years can bring some peace to all he victimized.”
