A Dominican national residing at a state-funded migrant shelter in Massachusetts was recently identified by U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as an illegal alien after he was charged with multiple firearm and drug offenses.
According to ICE, 28-year-old Leonardo Andujar Sanchez of the Dominican Republic unlawfully entered the U.S. at some unknown location and date at some point within the past year — what is commonly referred to as a “gotaway.”
Andujar Sanchez is currently in state custody in Massachusetts after he was arraigned in the Chelsea District Court on a host of gun and drug charges, including possessing a firearm and a large capacity feeding device, possessing a firearm in a felony, being an alien in possession of a firearm, the unlicensed sale or possession of an assault weapon, and trafficking in 200 grams or more of heroin, morphine, opium or fentanyl.
ICE says that the Dominican national was residing at a state-funded migrant shelter on Dec. 27 when he was arrested by Revere police.
The Revere Police Department then contacted ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston for assistance in identifying him.
ERO officers learned Andujar Sanchez’s identity and unlawful immigration status during a Spanish-language interview.
ERO Boston lodged an immigration detainer against him immediately following his arrest.
“Mr. Andujar has been accused of serious crimes, and ERO Boston takes its public safety mission very seriously — which is why we’ve lodged an immigration detainer against him with Revere police,” said acting ERO Boston Field Office Director Patricia Hyde.
“The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has charged him with possessing dangerous weapons and drug trafficking, and with the Revere Police Department’s cooperation, we intend to take him into ICE custody upon his release,” Hyde said.
