A Dominican national who in 2022 was one of a dozen people charged in a major drug trafficking bust in Massachusetts is now being held on an immigration detainer at a Maine jail.
Booking records at the Cumberland County Jail show that Freddy Antonio Baez-Nova, 43, described as a resident of Lawrence, Mass., was taken into federal custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Thursday, May 1.
Despite his residence being listed at Lawrence, Mass., in jail records, the ICE inmate locator tool indicates that Baez-Nova is a foreign national from the Dominican Republic.
Baez-Nova’s judicial status at the jail indicates that he has an immigration detainer lodged against him, which are used by ICE against suspected illegal aliens who have been arrested on criminal charges and who the agency has probable cause to believe are deportable from the U.S.
In April 2022, Baez-Nova was one of 12 people arrested and arraigned as part of a joint state, local and federal takedown of a drug trafficking hub operating out of Lawrence.

Authorities executed a search warrant at a stash house connected to the operation in Lawrence and seized approximately 4 ½ kilograms in suspected fentanyl, five handguns, one rifle, seven large-capacity magazines and ammunition.
At the time, Baez-Nova was charged with trafficking over 200 grams of fentanyl, six counts of possession of a firearm during a felony, six count of possession of a firearm without an FID card, six counts of improper storage of a firearm, one count of possession of ammunition without an FID card and possession of a large capacity feeding device.
In a press release announcing the dozen arrests and raid on the drug trafficking house, then-Massachusetts Attorney General — and current Governor — Maura Healey also described Baez-Nova as “of Lawrence.”
