Officers received a call around 9:15pm, and arrived to find a 56-year-old man suffering from a knife slash wound to the base of his skull.

Following a brief investigation, police identified the homeless 57-year-old Jay Larose as a likely suspect, and arrested him.

Larose allegedly approached his victim from behind before slashing him in the back of his skull with a knife.

The Portland Police Department did not release any details on what caused the incident, or whether the victim had any prior relationship with Larose.

The victim was transported to the Maine Medical Center, though his injury was deemed non-life-threatening.

Larose faces charges for elevated aggravated assault.
