An Egyptian national with alleged ties to a terrorist organization was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) agents in Pittsfield last week.
According to USBP Houlton Sector, on Friday, May 30, agents with the Rangeley Station encountered an Egyptian national near Pittsfield.
During their investigation and records check, the agents determined that the Egyptian national had entered the U.S. on a B1/B2 visa — used for visiting the U.S. for business or tourism — that had expired in 2018, meaning that the Egyptian national was illegally present in the country.
USBP Houlton Sector says that a further record check into the Egyptian national revealed that the subject had associations with a known terrorist organization, though the agency did not specify which terrorist organization.
The Egyptian national was charged under the federal Immigration and Nationality Act as a deportable alien and was transferred to the custody of U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for removal proceedings.
