The state’s top tourism association official says Maine is on par for a great season – tariffs or no tariffs.
Brian Langley, chairman of the board of the Maine Tourism Association, told The Maine Wire that when push comes to shove all that Maine needs for a good season is great weather.
“I am of the firm belief that good weather and good gas prices are the prevailing factors for a good summer season in Maine,” Langley said.
The top tourism official’s comments come in the wake of ongoing debate about whether Trump’s tariffs were going to hurt Maine’s summer tourist economy.
After several weekends of rain, Langley says Maine has finally gotten what really spells success for a good season – hot weather and sunshine.
“So many of my customers come from parts of the country that are consistently above 90 with humidity percentages to match,” he said. “Maine provides a welcome respite from the heat, beautiful vistas, and the iconic Maine Lobster!”
Langley’s family runs Union River Lobster Pot in Ellsworth.
The association of which he’s chairman has been around for over 100 years.
“Our membership consists of a blend of local leaders and organizations united in our vision to create economic opportunities for our membership and to promote the unique quality of the Maine tourism experience,” its website says.
Langley’s bullish tourism forecast comes amid late reports that the state’s visitor economy is looking pretty perky despite critics who worried the discussion of tariffs would tamp down tourist interest.
Further south, Old Orchard Beach – long a destination for visitors from Canada – has been teeming with tourists in recent weeks as local photographer Stewart Smith captured here:
