Who knew?
News that you can stun your bug to death, sparing it the indignity of a possibly painful boiling, comes amid the ongoing debate:
Do lobsters feel pain?
Yahoo News has revived the controversy, reporting that yes, they do.
“Lobsters do feel pain, and being boiled alive is painful for them,” claims Yahoo’s Ian Fortey. “In fact, scientific research supports this.”
Not everyone agrees
“The jury is still out. There’s no real scientific consensus on whether they feel pain if they’re boiled, but it’s the most traditional way to do it,” Greg Irvine of the Lobster Council of Canada told CBC several years ago.
And if anyone’s going to fret about a crustacean’s feelings, it would have be a Canadian, wouldn’t it?
Whether that debate is settled is immaterial.
But PETA folks are happy anytime anyone reports lobsters feel pain because they’ve been trying to stop Maine from cooking the state’s most popular delicacy.
“One method that minimizes suffering is electrical stunning,” Fortey reports.
“An invention called the CrustaStun emits a charge that kills the crustacean almost instantly.
“It happens so fast that no pain is felt. Death takes place in 0.3 seconds, while boiling can take as long as three agonizing minutes.
“However,” Fortey warns, “the device also costs thousands of dollars and may not be a practical option for home cooks or even most restaurants.”
