MICHIGAN — Armed security guards neutralized a suspect who drove a vehicle into Temple Israel, a Reform Jewish synagogue located in the Detroit suburbs, before opening fire with a rifle and prompting a large-scale law enforcement response.

The attack in West Bloomfield occurred around 12:30 p.m. earlier today, when the suspect rammed his vehicle into the synagogue and exited armed before exchanging gunfire with on-site security. Following the exchange, the suspect was shot and killed by the security team according to Michigan State Police and FOX live reporting.

The event unfolded after the vehicle slammed into the synagogue, where the gunman appeared from the vehicle and exchanged fire with armed security. The suspect’s vehicle caught fire shortly after and aerial footage showed a significant law enforcement response to the scene, in which the suspect’s identity has not yet been released.

Temple Israel security staff directly engaged the shooter and interrupted his violent plan before he could cause harm to congregants or staff, according to multiple law enforcement accounts.

Officials confirm that no injuries occurred inside the synagogue, which is also home to a preschool and day school.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Detroit Field Office, Michigan State Police, and other augmented agencies responded rapidly and announced lockdowns at nearby schools in precautionary measures to the heightened state of alert.

Michigan State Police stated, “We are asking for community members to stay away from the area to allow for police response. Troopers are also increasing patrols at other places of worship in the district.”

The suspect died on scene and authorities have confirmed that the situation is fully contained with no additional threat to the public. After the event, community support resources were immediately activities at nearby facilities including the Jewish Community Center.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer posted on social media shortly after the incident, condemning antisemitism and violence in Michigan and thanking law enforcement.

As the investigations proceed into federal authorities hands, officials continue to emphasize vigilance at places of worship nationwide during a heightened climate amid global tensions.
