The Houlton Border Patrol announced the incident on Monday, nearly three weeks after the suspect, Jason Brenner, 52, of New Jersey, pleaded guilty in the U.S. District Court in Bangor to failing to report his arrival or present himself for inspection.
On July 1, Brenner drove into Canada near the Calais Port of Entry and reportedly nearly struck a Canadian Border Services Agency officer.
After a brief encounter with the Canadian officials, Brenner sped back through the Calais station without stopping, traveling through the outbound lanes, dodging traffic entering Canada while bypassing the border inspection stations.
Border Patrol agents began pursuing Brenner, who allegedly reached speeds of over 100 miles per hour.
His vehicle was eventually discovered crashed in the woods off Route 1 near Indian Township.
Law enforcement discovered Brenner wearing body armor and transporting two loaded handguns and a knife in his vehicle. One handgun had apparently been jettisoned from the car during the crash and was found on the ground in the nearby woods.
Brenner refused medical treatment and was taken into custody by customs officials.
He faces a maximum penalty of one year in prison, one year of supervised release, and a $100,000 fine.
It is unclear what motive he had for illegally transporting firearms into Canada.
