Deputies first received a report of an alleged domestic violence incident on September 22, detailing an occurrence that allegedly took place ten days prior.
Law enforcement began investigating Clark. Evidence discovered during the investigation led deputies to secure an arrest warrant.
They took Clark into custody on Thursday in Houlton without incident on charges of domestic violence assault and tampering with a witness.
According to the Bangor Daily News, the criminal complaint shows that Clark allegedly tried to convince his victim to withhold testimony after he learned of the pending investigation.
Houlton City Council Chair Jane Torres told the Bangor paper that Clark will, for the time being, retain his position with the city and that his status will be reassessed based on how the court ultimately rules on the charges against him.
He has since been released on bail.
Clark’s arrest came shortly after he met with Gov. Janet Mills (D-Maine) on Thursday, who was in the town as part of her Aroostook County tour meant to focus on economic development.
The Bangor paper reported that Gov. Mills was with Clark at around 1:00 p.m. before he excused himself, and that he was arrested at 1:36 p.m.
