Secretary of State Shenna Bellows signed onto a letter with eight other left-wing secretaries of state demanding written confirmation from the new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary nominee that no ICE agents will be present at polling places.

“That we even have to ask for written assurances that the federal government won’t deploy armed agents to the polls is a sad and frightening sign of the times we’re in,” said Secretary of State Bellows.

“The Constitution and laws could not be more clear that armed federal agents are prohibited in polling places, but then it would also not be the first unlawful attempt by the administration to interfere with the states’ rights and ability to administer elections,” she added.

The letter, co-signed by the secretaries of state for Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington, was addressed to Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.).

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump announced that he plans to replace DHS Secretary Kristi Noem with Sen. Mullin beginning on March 31.

In the letter, Bellows pointed to a February statement made by DHS Deputy Assistant Secretary for Elections Integrity in the Office of Strategy, Policy & Plans Heather Honey, in which she promised that no ICE agents would be present at polling locations, and a similar March 3 statement from Noem.

Bellows and the other secretaries requested that Mullin, who currently does not serve in the DHS, provide a written promise by April 8 saying that no ICE agents will appear at polling stations.

“We have heard concerns from many of our constituents about potential voter intimidation that would arise from an armed law enforcement presence at polling locations. As such, we believe it is in the public interest to have a clear understanding of this policy from your office,” said the letter.

Mullin, who is not accountable to secretaries of state, is not bound to respond to their request.

Mullin has accepted his nomination to the DHS Secretary position, and promised to continue working to maintain a secure border and restore law and order.

“President Trump ran on restoring law and order, and he quickly delivered the most secure U.S. border in American history. I look forward to supporting @POTUS’ mission to safeguard the American people and defend the homeland,” said Mullin on X.

As a kid from Westville, it has been the greatest honor and privilege to serve the people of Oklahoma for the past thirteen years in both the House and Senate.

I am grateful to President Trump for nominating me to lead the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. I look forward to…
