A small airplane crashed into the harbor near Fort William Henry in Bristol on Thursday, leaving the pilot dead and the passenger injured.

At approximately 1:00 p.m., the Lincoln County Dispatch Center received multiple calls reporting a plane crash near Fort William Henry.
The Lincoln Sheriff’s Department and Bristol Fire and Rescue responded along with the Central Lincoln County Ambulance Service.
Responders arrived to discover a small single-engine plane lying upside down in the harbor in four feet of water.
Nearby residents and a construction crew had already begun to assist in the water.
Responders pulled the male pilot from the plane, but he died at the scene.
A male passenger was able to escape the wreckage and was transported to the Miles Hospital in Damariscotta with non-life-threatening injuries.
Initial investigation revealed that the plane left the Brunswick Airport for the Knox County Airport, but possibly experienced a mechanical failure while en route.
The precise cause of the crash will be determined following an investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board.
The names of the victims are not being released.
