A pair of lovebirds may be the culprits suspected of vandalizing the sign at Katahdin ‘s uppermost reach.

Baxter State Park officials reported the “act of vandalism” in a social media post Thursday.

The letters “H.M.” and “J.M” were carved into the middle of the Baxter Peak sign on Katahdin, which marks the 5,268-foot summit of Baxter Peak.

If that’s not a Mile High Club antic what is?

The sign denotes the summit as officially the “Northern Terminus Of The Appalachian Trail.”

And unofficially the Peak de Résistance (aka the highest point in Maine).

“Did you witness the act?” park officials asked in a social-media post. “Have you observed any social media posts from the individual(s) responsible, or heard any other discussions related to this?”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Baxter State Park Headquarters at 207-723-5140.
