The Kennebec County Sheriff’s Department is working to secure an arrest warrant for a Scarborough man who allegedly stole a camper from Manchester, Maine last month, and fled to New Hampshire where he was arrested and subsequently released.

The sheriff’s department first announced the theft on October 8 via a Facebook post. A 2025 Forest River Cherokee camper was stolen from a parking lot on Western Ave in Manchester, near Pyro City Fireworks.
The department issued contradictory releases on the date of the theft, with their initial announcement stating it took place on September 27, and an update issued on Tuesday identifying September 9 as the date of the theft.

An investigation revealed that a suspect had hitched the camper, worth $38,000, to a rented blue Dodge Ram pickup truck.
Law enforcement determined that the truck was rented to George R. Sproul, 32, of Scarborough.
Authorities eventually located the rented truck and stolen camper on October 6 in New Durham, NH. On October 14, the camper had moved to Bartlett, NH, where local police seized it and took Sproul into custody.
It is unclear why he was not arrested until over a week after he was first located.
At the time, the Sheriff’s Department announced the arrest, but instead of holding Sproul for extradition to Maine, NH authorities allowed him to be released on bail.
Now, Deputy Jacob Poulin with the Kennebec Sheriff’s Department is requesting an arrest warrant for Sproul so he can face justice in Maine for the alleged theft.
