The Lewiston Police Department is asking local looters to return items stolen from a condemned convenience store during a Sunday incident involving several alleged thieves.

Police received reports that multiple people were illegally removing items from the shut down Goshen Supermarket at 179 Lincoln Street.

Upon arrival, police determined that several members of the public had allegedly been misled into believing that the store’s contents were no longer wanted and were free for the taking.

Because of that misleading information, a group of people allegedly stole from the condemned convenience store, authorities suggest.

The Lewiston Police Department is requesting that anyone who stole from the store return their items anytime between 12:00 and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, until October 31.

They did not say whether they will begin a criminal investigation for anyone who fails to return the stolen goods. It is also unclear how the alleged thieves were misled into believing the store’s contents were free or whether a break-in was involved in the theft.

The Maine Wire reached out to the Lewiston Police Department for more information, but it did not respond immediately.
