A 27-year-old Warren man suspected of robbing a Scarborough bank was arrested in New Jersey after being involved in a car crash, police said Wednesday.

The Scarborough Police Department said Thomas Sawyer was taken into custody in Laketown, New Jersey, following the crash. His arrest came shortly after authorities responded to a report of a robbery at the Chase Bank at 1 Hannaford Drive.

Dispatchers received a 911 call just before 1:40 p.m. reporting the robbery. When officers arrived, they learned the suspect had fled in a maroon Chevrolet Trailblazer with out-of-state plates.

Witnesses later reported that a vehicle matching that description was involved in a hit-and-run crash on Gorham Road near Mussey Road. The vehicle continued north after the collision, police said.

The suspect was described as a man in his late 20s with blond hair and facial stubble. Police said he was wearing a gray sweater, jeans, black-rimmed glasses and tennis shoes. Surveillance images of the suspect and his vehicle were released by investigators.

No weapon was displayed during the robbery, and the suspect left with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have seen the suspect or the vehicle driving erratically, or who may have been involved in the crash near Gorham and Mussey roads, to contact Scarborough police at 207-883-6361. Anonymous tips can be left at 207-730-4386.
