The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a house fire that heavily damaged a residence on Red Oak Drive late Monday afternoon.

The Falmouth Fire Department requested assistance after crews arrived around 4:11 p.m. to find the home fully engulfed. No one was inside the residence when firefighters arrived, and no injuries were reported.

Smoke was visible from miles away, and nearby witnesses reported hearing what sounded like explosions. Two streets in the vicinity of Blackstrap Road were temporarily closed as firefighters fought the blaze.

Investigators interviewed individuals who had been staying at the home. They told officials that a fire had broken out earlier in the day while an electric space heater was in use and ignited a couch. They reported believing the fire had been extinguished before leaving the residence, but officials say it appears to have rekindled.

Because of the extent of the damage, the cause of the fire is being classified as undetermined. The investigation remains ongoing. No additional information has been released.
