President Donald Trump faced sharp pushback from Maine’s congressional delegation after he accused several Democratic lawmakers of “seditious behavior … punishable by death,” the latest in a series of statements that critics say pushed the boundaries of political rhetoric.
First District Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME) offered the sharpest criticism calling Trump’s comments both “disgusting” and “terrifying.”
Earlier this week, two U.S. senators and four members of Congress released a video entitled ‘Don’t Give Up the Ship’ directed to active duty military personnel and intelligence officers suggesting they follow no order they believe violates the Constitution.

In doing so, they seemed to be seeking to revive the “deep state” actions against Trump’s first administration, including a largely concocted scenario about Russian electoral interference and the first impeachment over a loosely defined “abuse of power.”
Trump responded with a series of posts on his Truth Social media platform, Trump labeled six Democratic members of Congress “traitors” and called for their arrest and prosecution, reminding that the penalty for treason can be death, writing:
“It’s called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL. … SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???”
Maine Delegation Responds
Members of Maine’s congressional delegation broadly condemned the president’s comments:
Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican, said: “The President should not be calling for the death of members of Congress because of what they say, regardless of how strongly he disagrees with their comments. Such incendiary comments risk sparking political violence.”
Sen. Angus King, an independent, said Trump’s remarks show contempt for constitutional norms: “For the President to somehow characterize … [constitutional duty] as a traitorous or some other heinous crime … is just a gross misunderstanding of our law and the Constitution.”
Rep. Chellie Pingree, a Democrat, called the comments “totally disgusting — and downright terrifying,” saying, “What happened to ‘toning down the rhetoric’?”
Rep. Jared Golden, a Democrat and Marine Corps veteran, said: “It’s a basic tenet of military discipline … to politicize our military … as wrong as injecting threats of violence into our politics.”
Outspoken Rhetoric Remains Trump’s Trademark
Trump’s statements fall in line with the bold, confrontational style that has defined his political brand for nearly a decade. The president is known for pushing the line with his comments — a hallmark of his approach that continues to energize supporters while drawing intense criticism from opponents.
While his language has frequently sparked controversy, Trump has shown no sign he intends to moderate his style. Advisers and longtime observers say the president views his outspoken posture as central to his identity and political success.
The clash over Trump’s remarks comes amid ongoing national debates about political violence, online speech, and the responsibilities of elected leaders. Critics argue that statements from a sitting president carry unique weight and can escalate tensions, while supporters say Trump is speaking plain truths and refusing to hold back.
