A 19-year-old UMaine student was found dead in an Orono retention pond on Tuesday after he was first reported missing in January.

The Orono police received a tip from a local resident, urging them to investigate the retaining pond outside an apartment complex.

Officers arrived to discover a deceased person in the water, and requested assistance from the Maine Warden Services to remove the body from the pond.

The Maine State Medical Examiner examined the remains, and authorities identified them as belonging to Chance Lauer, 19, of Orono.

Lauer was first reported missing in January.

At the time, police warned that he did not have a vehicle, left his wallet in his room, and had his phone turned off.

Law enforcement mounted an investigation, but were forced to call the investigation off without finding Lauer due to extreme cold and snow.
