At approximately 8:42 a.m., the Portland Police Department received a call requesting that they respond to the Homeless Services Center at 654 Riverside Street.

The caller reported the discovery of human remains in the woods behind the building.

Police arrived to discover decomposed human remains that appeared to have been there for “a significant amount of time.”

Police are working to identify the deceased. They do not currently believe that the death was suspicious, but the investigation remains ongoing.

The remains will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause and manner of death.

Investigators have urged anyone with information relevant to the case to come forward.

The police don’t currently believe that the death was suspicious. Yeah right! Don’t rule out the possibility of not reporting a death so that someone could keep collecting the deceased person’s welfare benefits.
