The Rumford Police Department arrested a convicted felon on Thursday after he allegedly cashed a $6,000 canceled check following over 20 convictions for similar crimes.

Police received reports that a man had deposited a $6,000 canceled check into his account at a Rumford bank and withdrew the funds before the bank flagged the incident as fraudulent.

According to police, the suspect, Rex Allen Call Jr., 40, of Mexico, Maine, was aware that the check had been canceled when he deposited it.

It had reportedly been issued by another Mexico resident in payment for work Call agreed to perform. Call then allegedly never performed the work, leading the issuer of the check to cancel it.

Police located Call and took him into custody, charging him with felony negotiating a worthless instrument and felony theft by deception.

The Rumford Police Department detailed Call’s lengthy history of criminal convictions, including over 20 convictions for a variety of crimes such as misdemeanors, felony negotiating a worthless instrument, forgery, misuse of identification, and burglary of a motor vehicle.

He also has numerous convictions for bail violations, probation violations, and failure to appear, and has been ordered to pay $16,000 in restitution.

Despite his miles-long history of convictions and his history of failing to appear in court and violating bail, he was released on bail and is not scheduled to appear in court until February 12.

Earlier this week, Mexico was named Maine’s municipality with the highest rate of burglaries – a superlative no town wants. It appears Call is aiming to expand the franchise.
