Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of a residential fire that tore through a home on Canaan Road early Friday morning.

The Pittsfield Fire Department responded to the blaze at 693 Canaan Road on Dec. 26 and found the structure heavily involved when crews arrived on scene. Due to the severity of the fire, the department requested assistance from the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

State fire investigators determined the fire originated in the ceiling area of the kitchen. Based on information currently available, officials said the fire is not considered suspicious. Investigators noted that additional interviews are still required before a final cause determination can be made.

During the investigation, fire officials discovered two deceased dogs in the fire debris. Authorities said the home was unoccupied at the time of the fire, though a neighbor had been checking on the dogs daily.

The investigation remains ongoing, and officials said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
