Portland Police Report Nearly 500 Crashes in First Two Months of 2026, Hit-and-Runs Remain Persistent Problem

PORTLAND, Maine — The Portland Police Department released new crash statistics on Wednesday showing that hundreds of traffic accidents have already occurred in the city during the first two months of 2026, including a significant number of hit-and-run incidents.

According to police data, officers responded to 232 crashes in February alone, the majority of which involved property damage. Police reported 207 crashes that resulted in property damage, 85 were classified as hit-and-run incidents, and 37 crashes involved injuries.

When looking at the year-to-date numbers, Portland police say they have already responded to 489 crashes in 2026. Of those incidents, 422 involved property damage, 121 were hit-and-run crashes, and 67 resulted in injuries.

Police also identified several intersections that continue to see the highest number of accidents in the city. The most common crash locations so far this year include:

Larrabee Road at Riverside Street, Forest Avenue at Marginal Way, and
Forest Avenue at Allen Avenue.

The same three intersections were also identified as the most common crash locations during the month of February, according to the department’s report.

The data highlights ongoing traffic safety concerns in Portland, particularly along several of the city’s busiest corridors where heavy traffic volumes, merging lanes, and complex intersections can contribute to collisions.

Portland police routinely release crash data as part of their efforts to track traffic trends and identify areas where enforcement, engineering changes, or public awareness may help reduce accidents.

The department has not announced any new enforcement initiatives tied specifically to the latest statistics but continues to encourage drivers to follow traffic laws, remain alert, and report hit-and-run incidents when they occur.
