If you can’t run a simple campaign you can’t run a complicated government.
The adage became reality for a state senator forced out of the Republican gubernatorial primary race.
Maine political-oversight officials cited “fraudulent qualifying contributions” in the campaign of James Libby.
The perennial candidate was forced to drop out of the race Friday.
“My campaign is no longer viable,” Libby wrote in a social-media post.
Libby was depending on public funding for his gubernatorial bid but state officials found problems with his paperwork.
The Ethics Commission determined that one of the people collecting matching contributions for Libby lied on forms that he collected $5 in cash from some contributors when he had not.
Libby denied knowing about the fraud but said he should have hired a compliance officer to oversee the campaign.
He was one of eight Republican gubernatorial candidates who had qualified to appear on the ballot for the June 9 primary.
Libby has a previous failed bid for governor, having never made it past the primary in 2002.
