A group of paddleboarders will meet in Tenants Harbor today (Friday) to honor the memory of Sunshine Stewart.

“Sunny,” killed adjacent to a Union campground a year ago, would have been 50 years old Sunday.

Stewart was murdered last summer while paddleboarding near Mic Mac Cove Campground, at Crawford Pond.

A group of her friends will meet at 3:30 p.m. at Tenants Harbor public landing and then paddle out together to High Island.

Stewart, who lived and worked in Tenants Harbor, just east of inland Union, will also be celebrated Sunday at Mic Mac, with a 3 p.m. “paddle out” on the pond followed by a campfire.

A barbecue with refreshments will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday followed by fireworks at Mussel Farm.

Donations collected during the weekend party will go to Sunny’s Memorial Fund.

The weekend festivities are designed to honor the popular midcoast woman who died after she had gone out paddling on the pond.

Police have charged 17-year-old Mic Mac camper Deven Young of Frankfort, Maine with her July 3, 2025 bludgeoning.

Stewart died from a homicide by strangulation and blunt force trauma on a small island in the pond.

Young is awaiting trial in Knox County.
