Taxpayer-Funded Domestic Violence Resource Center Sponsors ‘Drag Story Time’ at Sanford Library

On Monday, June 5, the Goodall Library in Sanford will host a “Drag Story Time” as part of the taxpayer-funded domestic violence resource center Caring Unlimited’s Pride Carnival.

Caring Unlimited’s Pride Carnival is open to all ages, with some activities being specifically targeted to children, such as face painting, games, music, raffles and two drag queen “story time” readings at Sanford’s Goodall Library.

After receiving opposition to their event announcement post on Facebook, Caring Unlimited said they had to remove and limit comments that were “hurtful and harmful to members of [their] community.”

“As the domestic violence resource center serving all of York County, we are committed to being welcoming, affirming of all members of our community, and providing supportive services to anyone who needs them,” Caring Unlimited said in the post.

“We are proud to add our Pride Carnival to the events celebrating Pride this coming month. We know that LGBTQ+ survivors may face additional barriers to accessing safety when experiencing domestic abuse and violence,” they said.

“We are proud to collaborate with Goodall Library and Sanford Pride and ensure that survivors know our services are here for them.”

Caring Unlimited is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that in 2021 reported a total revenue of $2,167,996.

In 2021 the organization received $1,746,708 in government grants, federal and state funding that is meant to help the organization offer support, safety and prevention education to anyone impacted by domestic violence.

Instead, for this year’s “Pride Month” Caring Unlimited will be putting Mainers’ tax dollars toward drag performers reading stories to children.

The Maine Wire did not receive a response to requests for comment on the event from Caring Unlimited, the Goodall Library’s director, assistant director or children’s librarian.

    Good on them for doing this! And shame on you for trying to demonize it. Your blatant bigotry only advertises the fact that your own sex life is so nonexistent that you have to meddle in other people’s.
    Also, our tax money is supposed to go to help ALL people, not just straight people. If you don’t like the US Constitution and our laws, then feel free to move to another country.
    People like you make all straight people look bad.

    Sharon, if you don’t like the age of consent in Maine you’re free to go somewhere like Romania or Thailand.

    Pride in how you decide to have sex or who you have that sex with is a strange enough concept for a lot of adults who base their lives and identities on things outside their sexual proclivities, being concerned how children who aren’t even experiencing sexual urges yet are going to be affected by exposure to this rutting farm animal culture isn’t quite the great oppressive evil you seem to think.

    When it’s a pantomime dame or a girl playing a guy in a drama people really don’t care, when it’s close contact and the context is overtly sexualised that’s a different story hour entirely.
