The Army Reservist who brutally murdered 18 Mainers in Lewiston on Wednesday evening has been found dead, multiple Maine officials have confirmed.
The late Robert R. Card Jr., the primary suspect in an act of domestic terrorism that targeted a popular bowling alley and a bar in Maine’s largest city, was found dead shortly before 9:00 pm in Lisbon.
Initial reports suggest Card was found dead in the area near the recycling and waste management facilities of Lisbon, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Hours earlier at a press conference, the names of his victims had finally been identified.
For nearly 48 hours after Card’s campaign of terror, Mainers had hunkered down in fear of a continuation of the vicious violence.
More details will be provided at a snap press conference in Lewiston at 10:00 pm.
This story will be updated.
I think I’ve made a connection, and figured out a possible motive. The event that he opened fire on was an event for the deaf. And Card had been fitted for “high-powered hearing aids.” Was Card one of the deaf who was in attendance? There seems to be a connection with deafness and hearing or something.
A man who was serving his country and had developed apparent paranoid schizophrenia after getting high-powered hearing aids does not meet the criteria for “monster”. That does not mean I do not mourn for the victims. Something is happening (those of us with common sense know) that we are churning out mentally incapacitated white men, some of who become violent. This is another wake-up call not only for treatment but a soul-searching about why this is happening.
To call the man a monster & terrorist is so ignorant of you. Unlike terrorist that kill out of sheer hatred and take joy in it; a mentally ill person usually kills themself once they come to their senses and realize the horror they’ve inflicted. This is more a failure of our mental health system that has been decimated at a time when incidennces are at an all time high. It’s also a failure of our law enforcement system that did not disarm him once he was identified as a risk. Now, to mask our failures, lawmakers will try to use this tragedy to advance their agenda by going after guns.
Before jumping to a conclusion about “monster” or especially “domestic terrorist”, perhaps the Maine Wire should do some investigation?
What exactly did the doctors observe who were treating him while he was hospitalized for an acute mental health event? That is not ancient history – that was *this* summer. There are laws to prevent what we now must acknowledge were possibly preventable deaths. These laws were not followed, and very level of leadership should be queried as to why they were not..
The citizens of Maine need to demand accountability and transparency. Where is Card’s note? There is no longer an active investigation – shouldn’t the Maine Wire be allowed to review it?? And what were the people thinking who encountered him this summer? Who did they inform? What did those people do? These are all questions the Maine Wire should vigorously pursue while citizens mourn.
Mainers deserve answers..
Cristobal is spot on. Since the country and leadership has not provided the support for vets and mental health issues we are doomed to experience these events over and over again. Card was displaying strong evidence that he was likely to commit these acts unless his community acted to help him. Just two weeks of treatment for a person who has indicated they wanted to shoot up groups of people is appalling. Further there is plenty of evidence that the psychiatric drugs given for depression are exacerbating their condition. In fact it is printed on the warning labels that suicidal and violent behavior are “side-effects”. It is only since the US started prescribing these profitable drugs widely (far and away more that any country) that we have seen these mass-killings become routine. But we can’t discuss issues that threaten Pharma and their vast political influence.
Glad to see some folks are thinking this through clearly. Instead the knee-jerk reaction of banning certain weapons, an inquiry has to be done on the failures in both identification and lack of action over the summer regarding Card’s obvious mental illness.
Mental illness treatment is woefully inadequate and to many has a very negative stigma attached. My question though is, what is the reasons for the illness to start with? Family breakdown, food additives, cell phones, micro plastics, LED lights? I’ve absolutely no idea. The Romans blissfully used lead in their daily lives not knowing it was very harmful, we could be experiencing the same thing now.
This is not the type of reporting I expect from the Maine Wire. It reads more like the BDN then the Maine Wire, sensational much? Get back to reporting facts and leave the sensationalism to the BDN and PPH!
