The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a train versus car collision on the Hammett Road in Enfield.

On Monday, April 1, at approximately 4:15 p.m., the Penobscot Regional Communications Center received a report that a car had been struck by a train on Hammett Road in Enfield.

Upon arrival, Penobscot Sheriff’s deputies confirmed that a car had been struck by a train and had come to rest a short distance down the tracks.

The driver of the car, the lone occupant of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries, while none of the occupants of the train were injured.

The car received front-end damage, and the train received minor damage to one of its sides and was not derailed or had any cargo impacted by the collision.

Although the cause of the crash remains under investigation, the Penobscot Sheriff’s Office said multiple witnesses and the driver of the car indicated the flashing red lights and train signals were not activated until after the vehicles collided.

The area of Hammett Road near the railroad tracks was blocked for a short period and there was no risk to those in the surrounding area, the sheriff’s office said.
