A South Portland man on Thursday was sentenced to five years in prison Thursday in U.S. District Court in Portland for the possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and possession of fentanyl and cocaine with intent to distribute.

U.S. District Judge Jon Levy sentenced 33-year-old Joshua Hopkins to 60 months in prison to be followed by four years of supervised release.

After pleading guilty to the charges in February, Hopkins faced a maximum of up to 15 years in prison on the gun charge, and from five to a maximum of 40 years on the drug charges — with maximum fines of $250,000 and $5 million respectively.

According to court records, in April 2023, Hopkins — who had an active warrant out for his arrest at the time — was located by investigators at a South Portland hotel.

A search of Hopkins’ backpack revealed multiple scales, a single round of 7.62 mm x 39 mm ammunition, a blender that contained suspected fentanyl powder, smaller containers of suspected fentanyl powder, bags of suspected cocaine, and what appeared to be a substance used to “cut” drugs, prosecutors said.

Hopkins, who is prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition due to prior felony convictions, was also found to be in possession of a black Norinco SKS-style rifle in his vehicle.

The liberal city awash in drugs!

Just this week there was a reported student death from a drug overdose on a small NH campus. Parents, who pay steep tuition fees to this school, do so to assure a stellar education within a safe, supportive community. One cannot begin to imagine the devastation this tragedy has wrought on the student’s family and on the survivors of this close knit campus!

Given the lack of law and order within this country today, greedy drug dealers are brazenly empowered, creating a travesty of justice. Without exception, drug dealers should be stopped in their tracks and punished to the fullest extent of the law!

That being said, why is the process of shutting down illegal Chinese marijuana farms in northern Maine moving at such a snail’s pace? Why not send in a large army of law enforcement agents and be done with it?
