Finland to Become First Country to Issue “Pre-Pandemic” Bird-Flu Vaccines

Finland is set to become the first country in the world to begin vaccinating humans against the possibility of an outbreak of H5N1 Avian Flu, commonly referred to as “bird flu.”

“In cooperation with the Finnish Food Authority, THL has prepared a recommendation on the target groups for avian influenza vaccination. The vaccine will be offered to those aged 18 or over who are at increased risk of contracting avian influenza due to their work or other circumstances,” said the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL).

The Finnish government has acquired 20,000 doses of the vaccine from pharmaceutical company CSL Seqirus, enough to give 10,000 people the required two doses.

According to statements made by the THL to Reuters, the vaccinations are likely to begin as soon as next week.

The first round of vaccines will be given to people determined to be at a high risk because they work in close proximity to animals.

Currently, Finland has no reported cases of Bird Flu in humans.

Last year, an outbreak of the sickness among livestock, which began among foxes bred for fur, led the country to slaughter 485,000 animals allegedly to stop further transmission.

The Finnish early rollout is part of an E.U. program to purchase 40 million doses of the same vaccine.

Currently, Finland plans for the vaccine to be optional, although it is unclear if that will remain the E.U. policy after the remaining vaccine doses are delivered across the region.

Unlike the majority of mRNA COVID vaccines, which essentially act as gene therapy and do not prevent transmission of the underlying virus, the CSL Seqirus vaccine is cell-based, similar to common smallpox, measles, polio, and rabies shots.
