The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday it has concluded an investigation into an alleged assault by a teacher against a student at Gray New Gloucester Middle School.

The teacher has been identified as Thomas Morawiec, a 48-year-old speech therapist.

Morawiec has been charged with a Class “D” misdemeanor for assault.

The investigation found that Morawiec assaulted a twelve-year-old student on March 25, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The incident, however, was not reported to authorities until May 28, 2024, when the parents of the victim informed the Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer assigned to the Gray New Gloucester School District.

Morawiec is scheduled to appear in Portland District Court on August 14, 2024.

“Assault” is pretty vague. It would be helpful to know specifically what is alleged to have occurred. It took the parents 2.5 months to report? If the charge is false a career could be ruined – the parents not prosecuted for a false report.
For all my frustration with schools these days there’s a lot of dysfunction and risk for teachers and staff that can destroy a person’s career – just on another person’s claim which may or may not be malicious.
