Multiple U.S. Cities Stop Putting Fluoride in Water Supply After Federal Ruling Acknowledges Risk to Children

Multiple U.S. cities and counties across the country have stopped putting fluoride in their water supplies after a federal judge ruled on September 24 that fluoride harms children and must be regulated.

“Fluoridation is a house of cards and it’s going to fall,” Rick North of the Fluoride Action Network said speaking to Children’s Health Defense. “It’s only a matter of when. Our job is to make the wind blow.”

Children’s Health Defense reported that Abilene, Texas; Yorktown and Somers, New York along with the entire Weber Basin Water Conservancy District in Utah have suspended water fluoridation in response to the federal ruling.

The Weber Basin Water Conservancy serves 700,000 people, while the three towns together are home to roughly 186,000 people, meaning 886,000 Americans will no longer be drinking fluoridated water.

The Fluoride Action Network, along with Moms Against Fluoridation and Food and Water Watch, brought the lawsuit against the EPA in 2017 for its refusal to consider the harms of fluoride in its regulations.

Judge Edward Chen of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California ruled that the current recommended U.S. fluoride level of 0.7 mg/L is significantly higher than levels needed to cause harm to children’s IQ.

“The Court finds Plaintiffs have met their burden in establishing, by a preponderance of the evidence, that community water fluoridation at 0.7 mg/L presents an unreasonable risk of injury to health under Amended TSCA and that the EPA is thus obliged to take regulatory action in response,” said Judge Chen.

Chen cited data from the United States National Toxicology Program (NTP) showing that every 0.28 mg/L of fluoride in a pregnant woman’s urine translated to a one-point IQ drop in the child.

Chen pointed out that the current median level found in pregnant women’s urine is 0.8 mg/L, significantly higher than the 0.28 mg/L danger level, and higher than the current recommended level.

The EPA must now amend its regulations considering the new information showing the damage to children’s health.

The current EPA regulations only require that fluoride concentrations do not exceed four mg/L, which is far higher than levels shown to cause harm.

Fluoride has caused controversy across the country since it was first introduced into water supplies in 1945.

Opponents have warned that it harms IQ, while proponents have dismissed them as conspiracy theorists and claimed that fluoride is perfectly safe.

The accused “conspiracy theorists” have now been vindicated on this issue.

Water supplies across the country are contaminated with fluoride intentionally put into the water, and Maine is no exception.

Currently, 132 cities and towns in Maine have fluoridated water supplies, including Augusta, Bangor, Auburn, Lewiston, Saco, Portland, and many others.
