PORTLAND — A Gorham man was sentenced today in the U.S. District Court in Portland to 25 years in prison for distributing and possessing child sexual abuse material, as announced by federal authorities in Maine on March 12, 2026.

Chief U.S. District Judge Lance E. Walker sentenced Cody J. Merrill to the term, followed by 15 years of supervised release, and ordering Merrill to pay $105,000 in restitution to the victims identified in the material he possessed. Merrill pled guilty to the charges on June 18, 2025 and court records confirm that he both possessed and distributed thousands of child sexual abuse images.

The case prosecuted in the District of Maine exemplifies the federal government’s ongoing enforcement priorities within jurisdiction.

Judge Walker’s orders place Merrill in federal custody for a quarter-century, a statement to the magnitude of the offenses under U.S. sentencing guidelines for child sexual abuse crimes. The 15-year supervised release imposes strict conditions on Merrill, although specific conditions were not outlined in the press release.

Merrill’s offenses occurred in Gorham, a community of approximately 7,000 residents in Cumberland County, where he admitted to both distributing and possessing the material. There were no specifics as to the methods or investigative techniques used in apprehending the suspect.

The timeline began with Merrill’s guilty plea on June 18, 2025, with his sentencing following approximately nine months later, on March 12, 2026. The case lifecycle from plea to final judgement was overseen by Chief Judge Walker, who has presided over numerous cases since his confirmation in the District of Maine.

The sentencing marks another successful resolution of a federal prosecution in the northeast. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maine handled the prosecution consistent with its mandate to address crimes involving child sexual exploitation and other minor-related offenses. The outcome concludes the federal case against Merrill and no further public proceedings are anticipated, with a long road ahead for one evil individual that once prowled amongst our communities here in Maine.
