Sitting Republican Congresswoman Who Hasn’t Voted Since July Discovered Living With Dementia in Nursing Home

U.S. Congresswoman from Texas, Rep. Kay Granger (R), has been living in an assisted living facility that provides dementia care, according to an investigation published Sunday by the Dallas Express, and has not voted in Congress since July.

“The lack of representation for CD-12 is troubling to say the least. At a time when extraordinarily important votes are happening, including debt ceiling, disaster relief, farm bills and border issues, Kay Granger is nowhere to be found,” said Tarrant County Republican Chairman Bo French speaking to the Dallas Express.

“The margin in Congress is razor-thin, and the lack of a Republican vote representing CD-12 disenfranchises 2 million people. We deserve better,” he added.

The local Dallas paper began its investigation while seeking to interview Rep. Granger about her position on a highly controversial spending package considered in Congress last week.

Reporters found the congresswoman’s office closed, with no signs that it had been in operation, leaving her constituents unable to contact their representative.

Using a now-scrubbed page from Granger’s website, investigators found that she has not voted on any bill since July.

One unnamed constituent allegedly informed the Dallas paper that Granger has been living at the Tradition Senior Living facility in Fort Worth, Texas, which provides memory care and assisted living accommodations.

The constituent claimed that the 81-year-old congresswoman moved into the nursing home after she was found lost and confused while wandering around her former neighborhood.

The Express visited the nursing home, hoping to speak with Granger and hear her opinion on the controversial spending bill.

Employees at the assisted living facility refused to allow the reporters to speak to Granger, though they confirmed that she lives at the facility.

“This is her home,” said the facility’s assistant executive director, Taylor Manziel.

Another Dallas-based paper, the Dallas Morning News, provided additional information, including a statement from Granger’s office and a response from her son, Brandon Granger.

According to the paper, Granger was able to return to Congress briefly during November to oversee the closure of her office and witness the unveiling of a portrait commemorating her time as chair of the House Appropriations Committee.

Granger blamed unexplained health issues for her failure to vote on any matters since July.

“As many of my family, friends, and colleagues have known, I have been navigating some unforeseen health challenges over the past year,” said Granger.

Despite knowing that health issues prevented her from doing her duty as a congress member, Granger refused to resign and insisted on finishing out her final term, collecting a taxpayer-funded salary while failing to represent her constituents.

Grainger’s son weighed in, claiming that his mother does not live in the memory care section of the assisted living facility, while admitting that she has been “having some dementia issues later in the year.”

“She’s in a building with a lot of other folks her age that are super active that she really loves. She has exercise classes, she gets to be around people all the time, it’s wonderful for her for this point in life,” said Brandon Grainger.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) responded to the situation on X.

“I’m more concerned about the congressmen who have dementia and are still voting,” said Rep. Massie.

Grainger’s final term in Congress expires on January 3, and she will be replaced by current Texas State Representative Craig Goldman (R-Fort Worth).
