A Guatemalan national, who was previously deported three times from the U.S. and served a nearly six-year prison sentence in Oregon for assault and weapons charges, pleaded guilty in a Maine federal court this week to illegally reentering the U.S.

Jorge Martinez-Urizar, 50, a Guatemalan citizen, pleaded guilty on Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Portland to entering the U.S. after a prior removal.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maine, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent conducted a records check on Martinez in November 2024, and determined that he had been removed from the country on three prior occasions, most recently in July 2005.

The check also indicated that he had not filed any applications or petitions granting him permission to legally re-enter or to remain in the U.S. lawfully.

Martinez was deported from the U.S. in 2005 after serving a 70-month sentence in Oregon for a 1999 conviction for assault in the second degree and unlawful use of a weapon.

For the charge of illegal reentry, Martinez faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.
