Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau (D-Biddeford) deleted his X account in the wake of intense backlash following his decision to censure Rep. Laurel Libby (R-Auburn) for exposing a transgender-identifying male dominating in girls’ high school sports.

Libby called out Speaker Fecteau on X for silencing her and failing to protect Maine girls shortly before he deleted his account.
“For those asking, the man that led this sham process in the Maine House — attempting to cancel me and silence the voices of Maine girls — is Maine Speaker of the House Ryan Fecteau (@SpeakerFecteau). He is a leader of Maine’s Democrat Majority and a pawn of @GovJanetMills,” said Libby.
Although the backlash on X is no longer viewable since his account was deleted, Fecteau’s BlueSky and Facebook accounts remain active, and the responses on those platforms hint at what he faced on X.
The comment section on Fecteau’s most recent Facebook post, unrelated to Libby, featured numerous commenters berating him for censuring Libby rather than protecting girls’ sports.
He faced a similar backlash on BlueSky, a social media site often considered a left-wing alternative to X.
While a handful of social media users defended the speaker, the majority of commenters were critical of his actions.
Libby responded to Fecteau deleting his account with her own X post.
“Apparently Maine’s Speaker of the House didn’t like hearing the voices of the people… State House Speaker Ryan Fecteau has deleted his X account, @SpeakerFecteau, less than 48 hours after the Democrat Majority’s attempt to cancel me,” said Libby.
Speaker Fecteau initiated the censure in response to Libby’s posting a publicly available photo of a transgender-identifying male athlete standing victorious over female competitors on her Facebook account, associated with her role as a state representative.

The House voted along party lines in favor of censuring Libby, with all Democrats supporting the censure and all Republicans opposing it.
“The Maine Democrat Majority has just moved to censure me, for speaking out against their failure to protect Maine girls and keep biological males out of girls’ sports. Let me be clear: I will not be silenced and I will not allow the voices of Maine girls to be silenced,” said Libby.
Tuesday’s censure will remain in place until Libby apologizes, something she has vowed not to do.
“I will never apologize for working to ensure that the voices of Maine girls are heard and that their rights are respected. Maine girls must not be silenced,” said Libby.
While the censure remains in effect, Libby is forbidden from casting her vote in the House, effectively depriving her constituents of their voice in the legislature.

Speaker Fecteau has no spine. As soon as the people started cooking him on X he left. Fecteau was so condescending and rude to Rep. Libby he should be ashamed. He has no respect or consideration for Maine girls. He only cares about the trans dude because his donors. Plus he clearly has no love for women saying that he’s married to a man rather than a woman (If he were married to a woman, she would have filed for divorce long ago though).
What a travesty it is for those biological girls, who have trained in sports for years to achieve a high degree of excellence, to be cheated out of their justly earned titles. Not by a peer who has trained better, honed a better technique, or overcome injury to excel, but by a boy pretending to be a girl. Only 1% of the population is transgender, and yet, Democrats would force the other 99% to pretend they are the same. Well they are not. In this case, this boy is bigger, stronger, and more muscular. It’s just a biological fact, stop trying to pretend it isn’t true. No one is saying this young man can’t compete, just do it as the biological male that he is, and let the chips fall where they may. If he feels compelled to compete with female features like hair and dress, who cares, but compete against other biological males. This issue has nothing to do with this young man specifically or personally. This is about Democratics absolutely losing touch with reality. And when they are called out for an utter lack of common sense, their only tactic is to resort to character assassination. Libby isn’t hiding from the debate, Fecteau is. What an embarrassment Fecteau is to the State of Maine and to the nation. What a black eye he is giving the state nationally. Have a backbone Fecteau and reinstate Libby to rightly represent her constituents.
