Platner Poses for Photo-Op at York County Jail Despite Its Recent History with Criminal Corrections Officers

Left-wing Senate hopeful Graham Platner brought his campaign to the York County Jail on Sunday and posed for a photo-op with the left-wing Sheriff William King, despite the growing number of corrections officers there indicted for smuggling.

Sheriff King, who is currently running for re-election, announced Platner’s tour of the facility via his campaign Facebook page.

“Graham Platner stopped by the jail yesterday for a tour. Major Lori Marks demonstrated the body scanner, and Sergeant Martin and Officer Leary briefed the candidate on the booking process of the jail,” said King.

“Graham also toured the housing units and spoke with several inmates about their experiences with incarceration. It was an enjoyable visit, and we are appreciative of the interest he has with county jails,” he added.

King used the opportunity to take pictures with the candidate.

According to King, Platner spoke with several inmates about “their experience with incarceration.”

The York County Jail is an odd location for Platner’s campaign stop, given the seemingly unremitting series of controversies striking the facility and King.

Since November, four corrections officers at the jail, all relatively recent hires, were charged with smuggling contraband to prisoners, with three of them also charged with accepting bribes from inmates.

The jail was also the center of a controversy exposed by The Maine Wire in November when a corrections officer was allowed to continue working at the jail for months after a wanted fugitive was arrested in her apartment.

In January, another corrections officer from Angola was arrested by ICE, though he has since been released.
