The woman who famously portrayed the rebellious Betty Rizzo in “Grease” has picked up stakes and moved from her stunning island compound just off the Maine shore.
But Stockard Channing isn’t forsaking her favorite coastal hideaway on Georgetown Island altogether.
“While Channing now considers London her full-time home, she does still own her property in Maine, with records showing that her longtime Georgetown abode remains listed under a company tied to her name,” reports Kelsi Karruli of Realtor.com.
“Spanning just over 16 acres, the idyllic waterfront dwelling is located just outside Little Knubble – on the shore of Campbell Cove,” Karruli writes.
“It’s unclear how often Channing is able to use the dwelling,” Karruli says, “however she does still return to the U.S. for work.”
In an essay for the Sunday Times of London, the unforgettable Rizzo says she left Maine behind after her longtime love Daniel Gillham died.
“Since just before COVID, I’ve been living in London,” Channing writes. “My partner, Daniel, died in 2014 and it was more devastating than I realized; it had a lag effect. The pattern of my life shifted, so I shifted my life from Maine.”
Channing and the cinematographer, who connected on the set of the 1988 war drama A Time of Destiny, had built their world together on Georgetown, according to E! Online.
“But the actress, who proved she was the one audiences wanted after starring as rebellious Rizzo in 1978’s Grease, felt unmoored without him there, making the decision to move to London,” the E’s Sarah Grossbart reports.
Channing, 82, has received numerous accolades, including a Tony Award, three Emmy Awards, and an Actor Award, in addition to nominations for an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, and three Golden Globe Awards.
Channing played Betty Rizzo in the film Grease and First Lady Abbey Bartlet in the NBC television series The West Wing (1999–2006).
Grease was released in 1978 and her iconic performance earned her the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Motion Picture Supporting Actress.
Georgetown, Maine, located between the Kennebec and Sheepscot rivers, remains her lasting connection to the U.S.
The New York City native sold her Hollywood Hills home for $2.7 million six years ago, according to Nea Leitereg of the Los Angeles Times.
