A medical ambulance plane carrying a young child and her mother crashed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Friday night in a neighborhood near the Roosevelt Mall.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a total of six people, including a doctor, paramedic, pilot, and co-pilot, were aboard the plane at the time of the crash. There were no survivors.

The plane erupted in a fireball as it crashed to the ground just thirty seconds after taking flight. The debris field was extremely large and several nearby homes caught fire as a result of the incident.

The Philadelphia Fire Department confirmed on X Friday night that they were able to get the fires fully under control.

Officials have not yet confirmed the total number of people injured on the ground as a result of the incident, but Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker has said that “many” of those in nearby “parking lots, on streets, in cars, and homes in the area” were hurt.

According to Temple University Hospital, six patients were treated and released for injuries sustained in association with the crash.

The BBC reported Saturday morning that a child was injured after being hit by debris while sitting in a car. That child was said to have had surgery at Jefferson Torresdale Hospital before being moved to a children’s hospital.

As of Saturday afternoon, officials confirmed that one person on the ground has died in connection with the crash, and at least nineteen others are being treated at multiple area hospitals.

Jet Rescue Air Ambulance — the company responsible for the plane involved in Friday’s crash — specializes in providing services to those in need of medical transportation in Mexico and Latin America. The plane involved was registered in Mexico, but the company has operations in both Mexico and the United States.

This is not the first time that the Jet Rescue Air has reportedly been responsible for a deadly plane crash. In November 2023, the company was said to be involved in a deadly crash in Mexico where five crew members were aboard the flight, and there were no survivors.

The final destination of Friday’s flight was Tijuana after a stop in Missouri.

“Our immediate concern is for the patient’s family, our personnel, their families and other victims that may have been hurt on the ground,” Jet Air Rescue said in a statement.

All those aboard the flight Friday were from Mexico. The child was in the United States to receive life-saving medical treatment from Shriners Children’s Philadelphia.

In a statement posted to X, Shriners Children’s Philadelphia expressed their condolences to those involved and said they would not be releasing any more information about the patient and her family at this time.

“This is a tragedy in our city – people have lost their lives and many injured in this horrific crash and the damage is significant,” said Mayor Parker in a statement on X.

“Our prayers are with the families, friends, neighbors and all of those impacted by the tragic crash,” she said. “We are unified in our approach – a One Philly philosophy with all hands-on deck.”

“I am so grateful for the rapid response by our Philadelphia Police and Fire Departments, our Office of Emergency Management and Philadelphia Gas Works with federal, state, and local first responders who swarmed the scene in collaboration with all first responders on the ground,” said Parker.

Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy has indicated on X that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will receive “full support” from the Department of Transportation in their investigation.

“I will continue to share updates as I receive them,” said Secretary Duffy.

Both President Donald Trump (R) and Vice President J.D. Vance have issued statements on the crash.

“So sad to see the plane go down in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,” said President Trump. “More innocent souls lost.”

“Our people are totally engaged. First Responders are already being given credit for doing a great job,” the president wrote. “More to follow. God Bless you all.”

“Very sad situation,” said Vice President Vance. “May God bless the victims and their families.”
