An illegal alien from Uganda who was released into the U.S. under the Biden administration after trying to enter illegally has been arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after he was charged with assaulting a pregnant woman, the agency announced Thursday.

Gedion Masunsu, 28, a Ugandan national living illegally in the U.S. was charged in Massachusetts with two counts of assault and battery on a pregnant victim and destruction of property. He was taken into ICE custody on Jan. 25 in Waltham, Mass.

According to ICE, Masunsu attempted to enter the U.S. with an expired visa at Boston Logan International Airport in April 2021.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the time issued Masunsu an order of expedited removal and paroled him into the U.S.

Despite the removal order, Masunsu remained in the U.S., and was arrested on Jan. 6, 2025 by the Waltham Police Department for two counts of assault and battery on a pregnant victim and destruction of property.

The Waltham District Court failed to honor an immigration detainer lodged against Masunsu by ICE that same day and released him, the agency said.

“Not only is Gedion Masunsu in this country illegally, he savagely assaulted a pregnant Massachusetts resident, endangering the victim and her unborn child,” said ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston acting Field Office Director Patricia Hyde.

“We will not tolerate such acts of violence against the members of our New England communities. ICE stands firm in our commitment to prioritizing public safety by arresting and removing alien offenders from our streets,” Hyde said.
