Portland police will deploy additional officers throughout the city Monday as part of an enhanced traffic enforcement operation aimed at reducing crashes and improving safety for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists.

The operation, scheduled for Monday Aug. 3, will focus on neighborhoods and roadways where police have received traffic complaints or identified patterns of crashes and unsafe driving, according to the Portland Police Department.

Officers will target speeding, distracted and impaired driving, failure to yield, stop sign and traffic signal violations, and other behaviors that place people at risk.

“Our goal is simple: to reduce crashes and make our streets safer for everyone,” Police Chief Mark Dubois said. “Traffic laws exist to protect people, and we hope this initiative serves as a reminder for all drivers to slow down, stay alert, and share the road responsibly.”

Police said the one-day operation will be followed by additional traffic enforcement efforts in the coming weeks and months.

The initiative is part of Portland’s Vision Zero Action Plan, a citywide effort intended to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries. Increased enforcement is among the objectives included in the plan to reduce incidents involving pedestrians.

The department regularly receives complaints from residents about speeding and other unsafe driving behaviors. Police said the enhanced enforcement effort is part of a broader commitment to addressing those concerns through education and proactive policing.

Authorities are urging drivers to obey posted speed limits, avoid distractions, yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, stop at red lights and stop signs, and never drive while impaired.

Drivers are also being asked to remain alert for pedestrians and bicyclists, particularly in congested areas. Police encouraged people walking or cycling to remain attentive and follow applicable traffic laws.

“Safe driving is everyone’s responsibility,” the department said. “By making smart choices behind the wheel, as well as when walking or cycling, we can work together to prevent crashes and keep Portland’s streets safe for all.”
