A Portland homeless man was arrested Wednesday morning for allegedly stabbing another homeless man in the city’s downtown area.

Portland Police say they responded to the area of Cumberland Avenue and Preble Street shortly after 6 a.m. on Wednesday for a report of a stabbing.

At the scene, police found a 41-year-old homeless man who had suffered a laceration to his hand.

The victim was taken to Maine Medical Center, where he was treated and has since been released.

Later in the morning on Wednesday, police arrested 37-year-old Christopher Hodgkins, also described by police as “unhoused.”

Hodgkins was charged with elevated aggravated assault and violating conditions of release.

Portland has seen at least three stabbings by homeless men this year, as well as one attempted stabbing. If the trend continues, this may lead some to consider changing the city’s motto from “Resurgam” (we shall rise again) to “Watch your back.”

This story is developing and will be updated with any additional information.
