One man was arrested on Tuesday after Lewiston Police launched their investigation into a drive-by shooting that occurred outside of a storefront on Pine Street.

According to police, shortly after 3 p.m. on Tuesday, officers responded to reports of gunfire near the intersection of Pine Street and Horton Street, where Webb’s Market, a small grocery store and deli, is located.

Witnesses at the scene told officers that the gunfire came from a dark-colored SUV that was driving along Pine Street, and was directed toward a group of men standing outside of a nearby storefront.

Police say both the suspect vehicle and the individuals targeted by the drive-by shooting had left the scene by the time they arrived.

No injuries as a result of the shooting were reported.

Shortly after responding to the scene, police located the suspect vehicle on Elm Street in Lewiston.

Police believed that an armed suspect had fled into an apartment at 25 Elm St.

Lewiston Police secured the area, conducted a threat assessment and evacuated bystanders from the building.

The Maine State Police Tactical Team assisted to execute a search warrant at the apartment because authorities believed the suspect was armed and a threat to public safety.

The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Whali Ahamed Henry, surrendered to police at about 10 p.m. on Tuesday without incident.

Police say a search of the apartment resulted in the discovery of evidence related to the drive-by shooting.

Henry is charged with reckless conduct with a firearm, a Class C felony.

He is being held at the Androscoggin County Jail on $15,000 bail

Tuesday’s drive-by shooting marked the second shooting in Lewiston in a span of three days.

Over the weekend, a 29-year-old man was shot twice outside of an apartment on Bartlett Street.
