The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department responded to the Bonney Eagle High School on Wednesday after a report of an active shooter situation that was later determined to be a hoax.

At approximately 11:49 a.m., the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department responded to the school for reports of an active shooter.

Numerous other law enforcement agencies responded as well, and the school went into lockdown.

Emergency Communications Officers at the Cumberland County Regional Communications Center eventually determined that the call was a hoax, but deputies continued to investigate out of an abundance of caution.

Deputies found no threat, but the investigation remains ongoing to determine who was responsible for the hoax.

Hoax calls of this nature, reporting a threat against a school and requiring a significant police response, have grown concerningly frequent across the state.

In January, a string of hoax calls targeted schools across the state.

On Thursday, the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department responded to a reported “incident” that prompted the Dr. Lewis S. Libby Milford School to evacuate.

They have provided scant details on that incident, but the students were all safely evacuated.
