The school district, which serves Old Town, Alton, and Bradley, received a threat Wednesday morning, prompting the district to place all of its schools on lockdown while police responded to investigate the situation.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the lockdown alert went out to parents at 8:19 a.m. They reported that roughly 20 law enforcement vehicles responded to Old Town Elementary School on Stillwater Avenue.
Neither the school district nor law enforcement disclosed the nature of the threat.
In response to the RSU 34 lockdown, UMaine sent out an alert to students because one RSU 34 school borders UMaine property.
Following a police response, the Maine State Police announced that the threat was deemed non-credible.
At 9:42 a.m., RSU 34 confirmed that the lockdown had ended and that the school would return to normal activities, with law enforcement remaining to assist when students are dismissed from school.
Police are continuing to investigate the origin of the threat.
A threat was also made by phone against RSU 29 in Houlton Wednesday morning, prompting that district to go into lockdown until the threat was deemed non-credible.
It is not clear whether the two incidents are related, though they took place around the same time.
