York Police responded to the lighthouse, commonly called the Nubble Lighthouse because of the small Nubble Island on which it sits, at approximately 6:13 p.m. following a report of a man trespassing at the historic building.
The caller reported that the suspect was dancing around the island naked while holding a golf club, and had used it to damage part of the lighthouse.
Officers responded along with the harbormaster’s boat to take the suspect into custody.
Once police reached the island, the man was arrested without further incident.
The suspect had been asked to leave multiple local businesses for disruptive behaviour in the days leading up to the incident, but police say those earlier issues did not constitute criminal behaviour.
After he was taken into custody, police transported him to an area hospital for mental health treatment.
Police did not reveal the suspect’s name, and it is not clear whether he will face criminal charges after he is released from the hospital.
