Every so often on a slow day a certain kind of fellow gets bored and says “hey let’s blow up an old camper trailer.”

That’s roughly what happened a few days ago in Stetson, Maine, Penobscot County, population 1,186, where firefighters got summoned to a trailer explosion.

Now this wasn’t just your garden-variety July 4th fireworks celebration.

What happened was some of the folks up in Stetson had gotten themselves some stuff called Tannerite.

“1,000 person tannerite party, everybody brings five pounds of it and we have a grand ole time!!!” joked Redditor SecureJysge1829.

“We’ve cut trees down with tannerite before. IDK if it’s 100% legal but.. yanno… Live life I guess haha.” – SoccotashSmall1720

State fire authorities aren’t laughing, however.

They say they were alerted to an explosion and black smoke coming from a property on Coboro Road.

Stetson Fire Department, as well as several surrounding departments, sent crews to the scene. They were joined by responding troopers from the Maine State Police.

“Residents at the property had placed Tannerite, a binary explosive often used for target shooting, inside an old camper,” according to a statement from the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The Tannerite had been detonated by some folks on Coboro Road, causing the camper to explode.

“The blast triggered a fire that threatened nearby woods,” state officials reported.

Responding firefighters from Stetson, Etna, Levant and Carmel, were able to extinguish the fire before it spread. Maine Forest rangers also responded.

The state fire marshal is now investigating the entire affair. Of course who can’t have a little fun on Reddit yucking it up over a little Tannerite.

“Sounds like a simple investigation, ‘I blew my camper up with tannerite and started a small fire.’” – vgallant’s summary on Reddit.

“I am down. I have a trash camper I have been trying to get rid of too!” – fishman1287
